THE OPPORTUNITY 

The Scholastic News Editions 3, 4, and 5/6 team is looking for a talented assistant editor to join its staff! Our mission is to capture the attention of elementary school students—and inspire them to engage in the world around them. Our award-winning classroom print and digital magazines are read by millions of students across America each week. RESPONSIBILITIES 

Core Responsibilities:

• Research and pitch exciting, curricular, and high-interest story ideas in a variety of areas: current events, social studies, science, social and emotional learning, and more

• Report and write compelling news shorts for upper-elementary school children, under tight deadlines, for both print and digital formats, as needed

• Interview experts, such as authors, government leaders, scientists, astronauts, change-makers, and more, as needed

• Fact-check and proofread articles

• Assist in ideating, writing, and managing content for the digital editions of our magazines, including videos, slideshows, and reading comprehension activities as needed

• Maintain positive and productive working relationships with peers in editorial, art and design, production, and marketing departments

HOW YOU CAN FIT

Skills and Experience:

  • BA
  • At least 1-2 years editorial experience
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience developing digital content a plus
  • The ability to balance a variety of projects with overlapping deadlines
  • The ability to work quickly and accurately to meet tight deadlines, and to work on a team where each member wears many hats and can pivot as needed
  • Knowledge of trends in education standards, curricula, assessments, and educational technology a plus
  • Knowledge of popular social media platforms, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign, and the Google Suite also a plus
  • Must be comfortable working with off-site colleagues through conference calls, screen-sharing (e.g., Google Meet), and file sharing
