THE OPPORTUNITY


Scholastic is seeking an energetic Manager, Earned Media to work with the award-winning Scholastic Corporate Communications team to strategize and coordinate earned media outreach, integrated communications planning, and special events that will generate ongoing positive publicity for Scholastic. The manager will work on publicizing products, programs, corporate social responsibility initiatives and corporate projects including research reports such as the Kids & Family Reading Report™. The ideal candidate has at least 6-8 years of PR experience, with a proven track record of success with general consumer and trade media, and a robust list of media contacts. S/he is a strong writer and communicator who can create an ingenious media strategy but is also passionate about pitching that strategy. S/he has an up-to-the-minute understanding of how social media is shaping earned media, the importance of visual storytelling and can demonstrate examples of placing editorial coverage that caught fire across social media platforms. Based in New York, the manager will report to the Vice President of Corporate Communications while working closely with all staff within the department and building relationships cross-divisionally.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES


• Brainstorm creative ideas for earning media that build positive momentum for products, programs and the brand
• Strategize pitch angles that capitalize on trending news stories
• Guide staff on ways to innovate and adjust best practices to be successful in our rapidly changing media environment
• Meet with internal “clients” in various divisions of Scholastic, to gather information, participate in long-term planning, and make recommendations for creating media and thought leadership opportunities
• Write persuasive pitches for media and aggressively pitch stories to a wide range of outlets
• Write press releases and blog posts while serving as an editor on a range of content
• Coordinate the timing and staffing of a defined pitch calendar
• Collaborate with the social media team to support earned media
• Identify, follow and build relationships with reporters, bloggers and influencers writing about education, literacy, parenting and related issues
• Create and maintain targeted media and social influencer lists
• Organize and maintain online press kits and other promotional materials
• Set up interviews for company spokespersons and prepare well-crafted talking points
• Plan and manage media events to launch select products and programs as needed
• Manage at least one direct report


HOW YOU CAN FIT


• Proven success at earning coverage in national, local and online media
• Proven success at cultivating relationships with reporters and social media influencers
• Ability to write clearly and persuasively with a digital-first orientation
• Superb editing skills
• Excellent oral and presentation skills
• Ability to handle intense deadline pressure
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize projects
• Understanding of research and data, and how to infuse with pitching
• Understanding of targeted, niche pitching; quality over quantity strategy
• Attention to detail, accuracy and diligent fact-checking
• Strong interpersonal skills and professional presentation
• Ability to work independently and as a member of the team
• Genuine passion for working with the media and staying future-focused
• Interest in culture, social, parenting, publishing and/or education issues a plus
• Agency and or newsroom experience a plus

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

 


• BA or higher and a minimum 6 years of experience in public relations.
