We are looking for a qualified HR Specialist in recruiting and retention to join our team at Scholastic Nation Service Organization in Jefferson City, Mo.

The Recruiting and Retention Manager works with the HR team to lead and execute all hourly hiring and onboarding activities. Recruiting activities include working with internal and external sources to find the best candidates for open positions, screening and interviewing candidates, supporting hiring managers, preparing job offers, and building candidate pipelines. The Recruiting Manager is also responsible for exit interviews, and working with hiring managers on the required skills and experience, aligned to the job descriptions for the various open positions.

The Recruiting Managers role will apply their business knowledge and recruiting and sourcing expertise to develop and implement recruiting plans and strategies to fulfill the staffing needs and drive overall HR functional excellence and recruiting & retention process improvement. In this role, the Recruiting Manager handles both regular and ad hoc reporting and HR data analysis for all sourcing activities, and applies this data to help make recommendations related to recruitment, retention, and onboarding approaches.


  • Develops and delivers holistic talent sourcing and new hire onboarding services and programs, including talent sourcing and identification, staff planning, communication strategies, and onboarding all new employees.
  • Manages and executes the full recruiting and hiring process life cycle (post, source, prescreen, interview, schedule, background, references, rejection letters, offer letters, pre-hire activities, and onboarding); uses a variety of tools and resources to do so (HRIS, applicant tracking system)
  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships with HR team, managers, supervisors, and other internal clients to ensure achievement of HR strategy and staffing goals.
  • Uses best-in-class recruiting techniques to build and maintain a consistent pipeline of potential candidates for future job openings; proactively reaches out to qualified candidates in pipeline for current open roles.
  • Builds applicant sources using a variety of networks, sources, and resources (employees, colleges, professional groups, employment agencies, events, media, and internet sites).
  • Identifies difficult job vacancies and investigates the best recruitment approach for them.
  • Promotes the culture through branded content and manages the Employee Referral Program.
  • Fully understands all HR functions and actively engages as a member of the HR team in HR research, project support, reporting/analytics, and championing HR initiatives.
  • Creates and maintains an environment of equal employment opportunity, diversity, and competitive advantage in support of Scholastic’s diversity and inclusion strategic plan.
  • Collects, tracks, analyzes, and reports on hiring metrics, including time-to-hire, time-to-fill, source of hire, candidate experience, onboarding experience, etc.; maintains HR data quality.
  • Advises hiring managers on interviewing techniques and assessment methods.


  • Bachelor’s degree; Human Resource Management, Organizational Psychology, Business Administration or relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability for high volume recruitment.
  • 3-5 yrs. previous HR experience as a Recruitment Specialist, Recruiter or other similar role.
  • Experience with an HRIS, Applicant Tracking System (ATS), and candidate engagement tools and approaches (social media, video interviewing, talent partnerships, and pipeline development).
  • Hands-on sourcing experience with online recruiting techniques and sites, such as Indeed, Glassdoor, Monster and with niche professional websites and recruiting platforms, such as LinkedIn, Taleo, etc.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
