The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting the company’s safety programs, processes, training, operations, site inspections and audits, advocating and fostering the Company’s “Safety Culture” of Personal Responsibly for Safety.  This position is located at the corporate office in Lake Mary, Florida and reports to the Corporate Director of Safety & Health. This position supports our network of warehouse and distribution sites, sales and office personnel, as well as our CDL Drivers of greater than 3,600 employees in the US.





  1. Take lead on maintaining, reviewing, updating and communicating our safety policies, processes, procedures and training programs in compliance with all local, state and federal safety requirements.


  1. Assist in the development of standards and programs that promote safety awareness and accident prevention.


  1. Monitor the effectiveness of our Safety and Health audit programs.  Lead or assist with safety audits/inspections of warehouse and driver operations teaching local management in self –audit techniques to ensure compliance with company safety programs/processes, local, state and federal OSHA and other similar regulatory agencies.


  1. Contribute to and support the company’s National Safety Steering Committee.  Facilitate meetings with preparation of agenda, Co-Chair meeting, prepare and distribute meeting minutes; facilitate outcomes and follow up on action items.


  1. Assist with investigation of all safety incidents, driver collisions and injuries by preparing the analysis of the cause(s), corrective actions, and reporting. Identify, inspect, investigate, follow up on reported safety violations/concerns and assesses work hazards. 


  1. Create/Manage internal updates & communication of regulatory changes, emerging issues and provide guidance to ensure compliance with applicable safety requirements in collaboration with the Director of Safety and supporting the Operational Leadership.


  1. Oversee and support the fleet transportation driver safety programs/training/processes in the areas of collision prevention, injury prevention, Driver reports related to scorecards and recognition for safe driving.


  1. Provide guidance to workers’ compensation claims reviews and input to Safety Director regarding active claims that are reviewed. Assist with tracking and follow up with others within the company on workers’ compensation claims with support and guidance to HR and Operational Leaders.


  1. Perform other safety program/compliance related duties and projects as assigned.



1.       Bachelor’s Degree in safety management, occupational safety, transportation safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or a related technical field.


2.       Minimum four (4) years’ experience in an industrial/manufacturing or transportation environment including administrative or analytical experience in safety/loss prevention activities in distribution/warehouse fleet operations, or previous administrative functions in the area of transportation DOT Compliance.


3.       Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively interact with operations management, warehouse and transportation employees, as well as other support staff and senior management.


4.       Must have sound judgment, strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ne willing to “roll-up sleeves” to support and deliver practical solutions for the Safety Department’s customers (Book Fairs Management/Employees).


5.       Ability to create presentations and training materials geared to senior management and employees.


6.       Experienced in developing safety policies, procedures, guidelines, reports and analyses as well as lead or participate on safety related project teams.


7.       Position may require travel between 10-15% of the time.


8.       Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access (data base creation and manipulation).



Skills and Experience – Preferred:


  1. Professional Certifications in Safety (ASP / CSP) or similar
  2. CDL (Commercial Driver’s Licence)
  3. Spanish Bilingual
  4. OSHA Certification
