 Senior Designer – Trade Licensing Art Department

The Opportunity:

Scholastic is seeking a Senior Designer to join the Children’s Licensing, Brands & Media Trade Art Department, to concept and design original fiction book covers and interiors for many of our top Gaming brands such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Hello Neighbor, RWBY, Bendy and the Ink Machine and Overwatch. This position would also allow the opportunity to design Graphic Novels, working with Illustrators and Lettering Artists for brands such as The Dragon Prince and the New York Times bestselling series, Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Your Responsibilities: 

• Manage the design and production of approximately 35 titles per year, working closely with the Creative Director and Editors.

• Create mechanicals in accordance to the printer’s specifications and provided templates, as well as work with electronic file management and be responsible for uploading covers and archiving projects in a timely manner. 

• Research new artists, hire and work with illustrators and their agents, freelance designers when needed, and give effective art direction to all. 

• Work with our Production and Manufacturing teams, from concept through the proofing process and color correction, up until the finished book. 

• Participation in larger group discussions as well as formally presenting designs to explain the concept and art direction to larger teams at Scholastic, including Sales and Marketing. Must be able to collect a range of feedback and communicate that constructively to artists or adjust their own designs accordingly. 

• Attend bi-weekly production status meetings for your projects, as well as weekly staff meetings.

Required Skills / Knowledge: 

• Ability to conceptualize ideas, sketch, and create exceptional designs, with a strong foundation in typography and understanding of book layout.

• Keen ability to design, manage, and juggle multiple projects at once, while meeting tight deadlines, and handling licensor feedback and approvals.

• Thorough knowledge and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
