A0100301 Requisition #

Choices, an award-winning health, life skills, and social-emotional learning magazine for teens published by Scholastic, is searching for a highly creative Senior Editor with exceptional writing and editing abilities and digital know-how. This is your dream job if you care deeply about young people, empathize with all of the critical issues they face, and feel driven to put stories that matter into the world.

The Senior Editor will be a vital part of the Choices magazine team, working with the Executive Editor and Associate Editor to conceive and execute the student magazine, digital edition, and teaching resources each month. Key responsibilities include:

• Pitching and developing smart, captivating stories that will make reluctant middle and high school students engage with their health and social-emotional well-being
• Reporting and writing at least two features per issue, as well as editing debates, backpages, and teachers’ guides as needed
• Collaborating with art and photo editors on all visual aspects of those stories, including design concepts, photo shoots, illustration selection, and more

• Assisting with all stages of production of magazine, including first-pass editing and final review of layouts as needed

• Assisting with packaging of stories, including brainstorming and researching fun and informative sidebars for features, debates, and backpages
• Overseeing digital repackaging for print stories, including creating and curating videos and writing posts for social media
• Contributing to teacher outreach efforts through social media, e-newsletters, classroom visits, and education conferences
• Engaging deeply with teachers and educational thought-leaders in health and social-emotional learning to ensure that the magazine and teaching materials reflect current trends and best practices

• Excellent track record as both a writer and editor of rich nonfiction stories; digital and video storytelling experience a major plus
• At least 5-10 years of experience in an editorial staff position at a print magazine or digital publication (preferably health- or teen-focused) that includes writing, editing, and assigning
• Expert story packaging skills for print and online, with a strong eye for engaging visuals
• Great versatility as a reporter and writer—you can deeply research and report a story on a serious issue one week, then turn around and compose a fun-and-clever quiz about procrastination habits the next

• Ability to write in a lively yet informative style that appeals to both teens and educators
• Meticulous attention to detail; comfort with all aspects of editing, including copy editing, line editing, and packaging

• True passion for the issues that matter to teens (boys and girls) is a must; education experience is a plus
• Excellent communication skills and stellar organizational skills
• Self-starter, able to work independently
