Scholastic News Edition 4 is looking for a talented writer to join its staff! As the senior editor, your mission will be to capture the attention of fourth-graders—and inspire them to engage in the world around them. Scholastic News Edition 4 is an award-winning classroom magazine that is read by nearly one million children in schools across America each week. Each 8-page issue is packed with fascinating nonfiction articles, debates, infographics, and more. You’ll write about today’s news and important events in history—from endangered animals to famous leaders to kids making a difference in their communities—in an engaging, kid-friendly way. This is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced writer to join the world’s largest children’s publisher and make a positive impact on the lives of students nationwide.


Core Responsibilities:
• Research and pitch exciting, curricular, and high-interest story ideas in a variety of areas: current events, social studies, science, social-emotional learning, and more
• Report and write compelling news and feature stories for children in upper-elementary school, under tight deadlines, for both print and digital formats
• Interview experts, such as authors, government leaders, scientists, astronauts, change-makers, and more
• Ensure that all content is age-appropriate and engaging for fourth-graders of diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Conceptualize and write content for the digital edition of the magazine, including video scripts, quizzes, slideshows, leveled texts, and more
• Fact-check, proofread, and research your own original articles, as well as those written by freelancers or other staff members


Skills and Experience:
• BA
• At least four years editorial/writing experience, preferably in children's or educational publishing
• The ability to balance a variety of projects with overlapping deadlines
• Strong reporting and interviewing skills a plus
• The ability to work quickly and accurately to meet tight deadlines, and to work on a team where each member wears many hats and can pivot as needed
• Knowledge of trends in education standards, curricula, assessments, and educational technology also a plus
