The Sr. Manager NSO Outbound Transportation will own the strategy and execution of all transportation moves to customers from the Scholastic’s National Service Organization (NSO) and be accountable for $30M transportation spend through direct and indirect reports across all customer facing transportation modes.  The Sr. Manager role is responsible for business process improvement (BPI) as well as overseeing the daily management and execution of purchased transportation services for outbound customer shipments to minimize cost and maximize service across all channels.  The Sr. Manager NSO Outbound Transportation will develop and own the strategy and execution of reducing total outbound spend by 3% or $1.5M while improving service levels to our end customers.




  • Demonstrate the ability to assess supplier capabilities, evaluate proposals and develop, recommend, and execute service level agreements (SLAs).Quantify the value of the SLAs and adjust provider demands accordingly.
  • Develop and execute spend category strategies and support the negotiation process for transportation products and services using standard and non-standard sourcing methodologies. Understand cost components and service capabilities for all modes of transportation available (TL, IM, LTL, Parcel, and Final Mile).
  • Set the overall strategy for assigned spend categories through business partner engagement, exploring transportation innovations, opportunities for efficiencies in consumption, market dynamics, legal requirements, and supplier analysis. 
  • Locate and introduce new and alternative sources of transportation to ensure quality and reliable transportation of goods and services at the optimal total cost.
  • Improve margin contribution through relevant P&L cost savings.
  • Establish and further develop on-going business relationships with impacted business partners to gain transparency of business priorities and alignment on rules of engagement for sourcing, negotiating and contracting with external suppliers to ensure the needs of the business are realized.
  • Stays current with market trends and supplier capabilities while demonstrating strategic thinking, transportation knowledge and functional expertise. 
  • Identify areas of opportunity, both short and long term, and generate business cases for changing behavior and/or strategy in order to realize measurable benefits. Generate cross functional support and organizational commitments to improvement. Emphasis will be on Total Cost of Ownership and strategic sourcing techniques that enable Scholastic to realize its growth, service and profitability targets. 
  • Lead all private fleet operations on the Jefferson City campus






  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or related field
  • 10+ years management experience in Manufacturing, Distribution, Supply Chain Management, or Logistics
  • Able to analyze large data sets, summarize, and  present to internal customers
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Proven track record of managing projects resulting in significant cost savings and/or service improvements
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
